  1. WELCOME TO THE BILL DRAWER!
  2.  
  3. This program is designed to help you pay your bills in a timely manner.
  4. Unlike "checkbook" programs, which assume you know what you want to pay,
  5. "The Bill Drawer" helps you organize your bills by their due date,
  6. then gives you powerful features to review, select and write checks for
  7. only the bills you desire.  In addition, there are many features to help
  8. you control and analyze your unpaid bills and expenditures like:
  9.  
  10.   * Recurring bills
  11.   * Disputed bills
  12.   * Late or discounted payment amounts
  13.   * Cash requirements reporting
  14.   * Multiple expense categories per bill
  15.   * Monthly and yearly statistics for companies and categories
  16.   * Full check register and supporting detail
  17.   * Support for multiple bank accounts
  18.   * Support for multiple preprinted check formats
  19.   * Payment history reporting by company or category
  20.   * 941 tax reporting
  21.   * Credit card tracking

  23. Furthermore, The Bill Drawer contains many features to help you control
  24. and reconcile your bank accounts like:

  26.   * Full check register with supporting detail
  27.   * Manual check, deposit and withdrawal entry
  28.   * Control of last check number used
  29.   * Multiple expense categories per check or withdrawal
  30.   * Multiple income categories per deposit
  31.   * Support for voided checks and corrections
  32.   * Monthly and yearly statistics for each bank account
  33.   * Full account reconciliation functions to help balance your statements
  34.   * Tax deductable payment tracking

  36. Finally, recognizing that these are your important financial records,
  37. The Bill Drawer contains a complete security system keyed by user name
  38. and password.  You can fully control who can access any program function,
  39. and whether they can merely look at or update the information presented
  40. by that function.

  43. PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
  44.   * Microsoft Windows - The Bill Drawer is a Microsoft Windows
  45.     program, and as such requires Windows version 3.1 or higher.
  46.     This program has been especially optimized for Windows 3.1 and
  47.     will not function with Windows 3.0.
  48.  
  49.   * MS-DOS version 3.3 or higher is required.
  50.  
  51.   * A minimum of 3 megabytes of hard disk space is required to install
  52.     and operate the program.
  53.  
  54.   * SHARE.EXE - The Bill Drawer requires SHARE for both program
  55.     installation and normal operation.  SHARE is a MS-DOS command that
  56.     helps protect the data files from damage if multiple users or
  57.     applications access the files simultaneously.  To load SHARE,
  58.     simply type "SHARE" from the MS-DOS command line BEFORE starting
  59.     Windows.  You can also place the command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

  61.     CAUTION:  IF YOU DO NOT HAVE SHARE LOADED NOW, YOU MUST DO SO
  62.     BEFORE STARTING THE INSTALLATION PROGRAM.

  65. INSTALLATION:
  66.   The Bill Drawer comes with an automated install program, which
  67.   will install the programs, files, and help files required to
  68.   execute the program under Microsoft Windows to your hard disk.
  69.  
  70.   To execute this install program, follow these steps:
  71.  
  72.   1. Make sure you have at least 3 megabytes of freespace on your hard
  73.      drive.
  74.  
  75.   2. Make sure you have SHARE.EXE loaded.
  76.  
  77.   3. Load Windows and make sure that all extraneous applications
  78.      are closed.
  79.  
  80.   4. Select the "Run" menu option under "Program Manager File"
  81.      menu.
  82.  
  83.   5. Run the install program, by entering a command line of
  84.      "A:INSTALL.EXE" or whatever path will point to the install
  85.      program.
  86.  
  87.   6. View the technical notes by clicking on the "View Tech Notes"
  88.      button.  We suggest you print these notes using the "Print Topic"
  89.      option under the "File" menu.
  90.  
  91.   7. View the license agreement by clicking on the "View License Info"
  92.      button.
  93.  
  94.   8. Complete the desired installation options and select "OK".  Use
  95.      the program help, if you don't understand a specific option.

  98. MANUAL INSTALLATION PROCESS:
  99.    Should the automated install program fail for any reason, you
  100.    can try manually installing the program using the following
  101.    steps:
  102.  
  103.    1. Create a directory on your hard disk for The Bill Drawer.
  104.       For example, "C:\MELSOFT\BILLS".  Off this directory,
  105.       create DATA and BACKUP sub-directories.  For example,
  106.       "C:\MELSOFT\BILLS\DATA" and "C:\MELSOFT\BILLS\BACKUP".
  107.  
  108.    2. From the DOS command line, run the manual installation procedure
  109.       MANUAL.BAT.  Specify the directory where the distribution files
  110.       reside and the new directory you created as the parameters.
  111.       For example, type "A:", then "MANUAL A: C:\MELSOFT\BILLS"
  112.       at the MS-DOS command line to copy all the distribution files
  113.       from "A:" to "C:\MELSOFT\BILLS" and "C:\MELSOFT\BILLS\DATA".
  114.       Note that ending back slashes are not entered.
  115.  
  116.    3. If you did not use the directory name, "C:\MELSOFT\BILLS",
  117.       then you must use the Windows Notepad editor (in the Accessories
  118.       group) to edit the MAP0300.INI file.  This file was copied to
  119.       the directory you specified in step 2.  You will need to change
  120.       the "FileDir=", "BackupDir=" and "ReportDir=" parameters to
  121.       match the directory names you chose.  View the technical notes
  122.       for additional information on these parameters.

  124.    4. Create a new program group and program item, using the
  125.       Windows Program Manager File Menu (New option).  The program
  126.       item should reference the correct path and "MAPMAIN.EXE".
  127.       For example, a command line of "C:\MELSOFT\BILLS\MAPMAIN.EXE"
  128.       would be entered for the new program item.

  130.    5. Double click on the new program item you just created and
  131.       start using The Bill Drawer.  Note that you should not get
  132.       any file missing messages when you start up the program.  If
  133.       you did, then the directory names in the MAP0300.INI file are
  134.       not correctly specified.
  135.  
  136.    6. It would be greatly appreciated if you would send us a note
  137.       indicating what problems you had with the automatic installation
  138.       program.  Use our registration address and be sure to mention your
  139.       model of computer, amount of memory, MS-DOS Version and MS-Windows
  140.       Version.

  143. REGISTRATION:
  144. In addition to a clear conscious, registration includes the following:
  145.  
  146.   * The current commercial version of the program and notification of
  147.     new program versions.
  148.  
  149.   * The Bill Drawer User Guide, a printed manual containing over 130
  150.     pages of information.  It includes information on ordering checks
  151.     and sample check forms.
  152.  
  153.   * The reporting engine and associated standard reports.  Over fifteen
  154.     different reports are provided to help you get more value out of
  155.     The Bill Drawer.  The reporting engine let's you review these reports
  156.     in a scrollable, re-sizable window, or print them to any Windows
  157.     supported printer.
  158.  
  159.   * Paradox format files.  The commercial version of The Bill Drawer
  160.     uses Paradox format files.  The Paradox file format is the native
  161.     format of Borland's Paradox database system and is supported by many
  162.     different software products.  Since The Bill Drawer adheres to this
  163.     file format for all it's major files, you can use these products to
  164.     build additional windows, reports or functions specific to your own
  165.     requirements.  For example, you could use Borland's Quattro Pro
  166.     spreadsheet to import bank account, category or company statistics
  167.     and further summarize or graph them.

  169. Note: The commercial version includes a procedure to convert your existing
  170.       shareware Bill Drawer files to the Paradox format.
  171.  
  172. Per the license agreement, you may use this program for 30 days to evaluate
  173. it's suitability to your needs.  At the end of  this period you must either
  174. register it or delete it from all computer systems where it was installed.
